Math Careers: Physicist Careers

What is a physicist?
Physics is the study of matter, the basis of all things in the universe. Physicists examine how matter behaves and changes from one form to another. Say you fill an ice tray with water and put it in the freezer. That water (liquid matter) will change to ice (solid matter) – and you’ll get a nice cool beverage. Physicists understand how that change happens. They use their knowledge and extensive research to test theories, design new products and teach students all about physics.

How much education do you need?
Most physicist careers require a master’s degree or a Ph.D., M.D. or J.D. (law degree).

Does this career fit your personality type?
This career is great for investigative and realistic types.

SKILLS YOU NEED
Math
Physicists use their math skills and perform complex calculations to figure out how objects move.
Brain Power
Like doing research? Physicists analyze a lot of data, solve problems and often share their findings in their own scientific publications.
Creativity
It’s not easy to understand how objects move, so physicists design computer models to help people understand.
Science
Physics involves observation and coming up with theories about how things move and energy works. That requires a lot of science.
Writing
Physicists write articles, papers and books to share their knowledge. Some even create lesson plans for high school or college students.
Time Mastery
Various industries and companies use a physicist’s research to get their own projects done, so research has to be done quickly.
